INSIGHT WARGAMES

Stone Paper Scissors has several decades of experience in designing and delivering analytical wargames for a variety of clients within government, business and academe.

Generally our our analytical wargames are designed to be played in person and using manual (i.e. not primarily using software) techniques.

They are bespoke to the problem set you bring, and following a tried and tested development cycle:

a. Establish your 'master question' – what is the problem you wish to understand or analyse? We support you in refining your requirement in order to get the best, most productive, outcome from the wargame

b. Identify the data capture requirements for analysis or insight gathering, specifically related to your question / problem.

b. Develop and apply appropriate methods, simulation models and techniques to use for your wargame, that will effectively expose the question and encourage good data capture. Complex problems do not always require complex wargames, and not all wargame techniques work as well with all problem-sets. Our game design team draws on extensive experience to derive the best fit toolset for your wargame question.

c. Deliver the wargame, with your team and ensure that data capture is robust and relevant.

d. Analysis. Either working with your team to analyse the results, or use our analysts to prove a post-wargame report, as appropriate.

Throughout the process, the SPS team will work closely with your team to ensure the wargame output is relevant, and timely.

An SPS Analytical wargame is suitable for any size of group and any duration, the size and length of the game is determined by your requirement.

What is an Analytical Wargame?

An analytical wargame is a structured process used to explore decisions, gather insights and improve understanding of complex problems. Participants represent key actors and make choices within a realistic, relevant, scenario. These decisions iterate, and facilitators, subject matter experts and adjudicators assess consequence and outcomes of those decisions as the game progresses. Unlike games designed primarily for training or team-building, analytical wargames aim to generate insights, identify risks and opportunities, examine assumptions, and support policy, military, business, organisational or strategic decision-making.
