Dewa Ken
Dewa Ken
Immersive/Role-Play Focus
“Dewa Ken: Step Into the Council of Clans — Roleplay, Reason, and Resolve in 16th Century Japan.”
Outline
Dewa Ken is a council game where players are representing Japanese samurai lords trying to arrive at an agreed plan to defend their lands against an attack from an ambitious and powerful neighbouring warlord.
The players are the leadership and senior members of two allied samurai clans, the AKITA and the MOGAMI.
In the game they have to communicate, negotiate and problem solve with their fellow council members to come up with a successful plan to defend their lands.
However, this game is framed within a particular cultural context – that of 16th Century Japan. This makes this game more than just a freewheeling discussion. The game requires them to adopt very specific and unfamiliar ways of communicating and reaching a decision.
Gameplay
This is particularly interesting for groups seeking to practice difficult communication as this unfamiliarity with the process means that much greater care has to be taken on the form of any conversation. The council rules mean that players must try to shape their ideas into very specific speeches. This is like a formal debate, but with more subtleties.

Alternatively, the game is suitable for those interested in exploring Japanese History and unfamiliar cultures as well as anyone who likes role-playing.
